James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan Movie Collaborations, Ranked

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan starred in four movies together: Next Time We Love (1936), The Shopworn Angel (1938), The Shop Around the Corner (1940), and The Mortal Storm (1940). To me, Stewart and Sullavan were an excellent pairing — their chemistry! Goodness! — that should’ve definitely been in more films later on.

Good friends (Sullavan even married Stewart’s best friend Henry Fonda), there’s something so fun about seeing them opposite each other on-screen. Below, we’ve compiled a list of every single movie they made together, ranked! Enjoy!

All 4 James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan Movies, Ranked

4. Next Time We Love

  • Genre: Drama / Romance
  • Starring: Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, Ray Milland
  • Directed by: Edward H. Griffith

1st Stewart-Sullavan Movie Made

The “worst” film James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan ever made together goes to Next Time We Love. It’s not necessarily a terrible film. It lacks in certain areas, but it’s always fun to see a young, up-and-coming Jimmy Stewart in films!

Next Time We Love follows a newlywed couple who, while they both love each other very much, also happen to be very career-driven. In this film, we’ve got romantic drama between Stewart and Sullavan — as well as a bit of a love triangle!

3. The Shopworn Angel (1938)

  • Genre: Drama / Romance
  • Starring: Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, Walter Pidgeon, Hattie McDaniel
  • Directed by: H.C. Potter

2nd Stewart-Sullavan Movie Made

In third place, we’ve got The Shopworn Angel, the second movie James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan ever made together. This film is very enjoyable, very dramatic, and very romantic. Again, we have Stewart and Sullavan opposite each other in a romance! The Shopworn Angel follows a showgirl who allows a young soldier to court her before he goes off to join World War I.

2. The Mortal Storm (1940)

  • Genre: Drama
  • Starring: Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, Robert Young, Frank Morgan
  • Directed by: Frank Borzage

4th Stewart-Sullavan Movie made

Okay, now we’re getting to the REALLY good films. I adore both The Mortal Storm and The Shop Around the Corner. Both are just so good — and both Sullavan and Stewart are equally amazing here.

The Mortal Storm, therefore, is definitely one of the best James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan movies ever made… if not the best movie collaboration. The film follows a family in Germany that is torn apart as Hitler and the Nazis rise to power. One of the first clearly anti-Nazi movies made in Hollywood, this movie is dramatic and heartbreaking.

The film mainly follows Freya (Sullavan) and her life, as well as those she loves. When Hitler rises to power, her father (Frank Morgan) is put in a concentration camp because he spoke out against Hitler. Meanwhile, the two men that previously courted her before the Third Reich’s rise are flung into two different paths — Martin (Stewart) must flee out of the country because of his political beliefs, while Fritz (Robert Young) joins the Nazis. Truly a must-watch film!

1. The Shop Around the Corner (1940)

  • Genre: Comedy / Romance / Drama
  • Starring: Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, Frank Morgan
  • Directed by: Ernst Lubitsch

3rd Stewart-Sullavan Movie Made

The best movie James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan ever made together? Why, The Shop Around the Corner, of course! Their third collaboration just happens to be their best. It also happens to be one of the best Christmas movies ever. Trust me, you’re going to want to watch this delightful, romantic film.

The Shop Around the Corner follows two feuding coworkers — played by Stewart and Sullavan — who work at a gift shop and just severely don’t get along. The only thing that they really look forward to in their lives is communicating with their secret pen-pals, where they can open up, talk about their hopes and dreams, and truly be themselves. The duo has no idea that they are, in fact, their own pen pals!
