Grayscale, Katy NoBangs, 6min
Reclaim the crayons. Scribbling, drawing and colorful identity are painted by single line blind drawings and voiceover stories. Because the world isn't so black & white this animated piece brings the in between to life -- a lively "grayscale" that colors outside the lines.

Sterilized Cherry, Susan Choi, 5min
Sterilized Cherry is an experimental animation using new and old images of Lolita set against pin-up photos and school girl video clips of the artist as well as icons of orientalism and youthful female consumption. Thus the figure of a Caucasian Lolita represents the Asian girl's sexual and consumerist fantasies, where the Asian girl both desire Lolita and also desires to be like her. In juxtaposing these images with a candy-coated soundtrack of "la-la"s, Choi simultaneously critiques stereotypical images of Asian women as consumable objects who lack their own agency for sexual desire and an Asian cultural context in which young Asian girls assert their agency by prostituting themselves in order to possess the latest designer handbags and over packaged candy.
Carve, Gretchen Hildebran, 5min
A documentary that explores body cutting as an artistic and ritualistic practice. Two San Francisco-based visual artists design patterns to cut on each other and discuss how cutting intersects with their work and personal lives. After situating cutting in this context, the artists offer a uniquely intimate view of the cutting process as an exhilarating and liberating practice.
Operation Invert, Tara Mateik, 15min
Are gender outlaws considered the new biological terrorists seeking weapons of mass bodily destruction? Operation Invert compares the different regulations mediating botox-related plastic surgery and gender reassignment "sex change." Historical medical assessments of the invert (homosexual and transsexual) "condition" reveal seemingly outdated absurdities about outsider deviance. Nonetheless, current institutional loopholes governing gender re-assignment surgery suggest a fresh resurgence of loony pathology and diagnosis.
Saul Searching, Lala Endara, 7min
Saul Searching is a cinema-verite portrait of a transgendered Latino youth. In the video, he explains how and why he became 'Saul'.
Secret Picnic, Philipe Lonestar, 10 minutes, video, 2004
A fanciful experimental film which paints its gender-queer premises in candy colors. Our protagonists answer the summons of their techno-magic heart rings to spend a joyous afternoon among the fake flowers and pink cakes. Their idyll is shattered when each is transported to face traumatic moments from their pasts. |
